Polar Express: An Express Ticket to Financial Literacy

Help me give my students project based learning experience using Polar Express train tickets, a cash register, and interactive bulletin boards to teach financial fluency and how time is money.

My Project

Every student in my building knows the movie "Polar Express". What better to teach complex ideas of cash flow, budgeting, and investing money than to use what motivates students, Polar Express. Students will see their classroom transform into a Polar Express with a cash register, task cards, and pocket charts to track cash flow of the train rides. This teacher created financial literacy project will teach students how to track money going out and money going in with pocket charts, task cards, and a cash register. Students will use task cards, pocket charts, and pocket calendars to graph the flow of of money, track money going out as they pay employees and make repairs. With Polar Express financial literacy the lessons students will learn are endless. Plus with all the reusable pocket charts, removable stickers, and dry erase index cards it will be so easy to transform our classroom into a winter camp project based learning classroom for another unit on financial literacy.

Charles Schwab once said, "Focus on strengths and what you enjoy", my students enjoy Polar Express so what better to teach financial literacy than through Polar Express project based learning.
