Point Students in the Right Direction!

Help me give my students pocket compasses to explore the effect magnets have on a compass. We will also use them when we build electromagnets.

My Students

My students love to learn! We are a small rural school with limited resources. Many of my students are from families that have been farming for generations. Many of the parents of my students work at least two jobs to support their families.

Our students love to learn using hands-on activities.

My students are hard working and family oriented. We would appreciate having materials to use for our science inquiry. We would love to have lab supplies so that we could do more experiments. We are energetic and ready to learn!

Our science classes are fully integrated. Therefore we have many abilities in the same classroom and are always trying to find ways to include everyone.

My Project

Compasses may seem old fashioned in today’s world, but knowing how to use a compass is still a valuable skill. Teaching students this skill gives students a practical way to understand the cardinal directions.

We would like to have pocket compasses to use when we explore magnets.

We will use them when we build an electromagnet. We would like to explore the effect an electromagnet has on a compass.

It is so beneficial for some students to actually see the effect, instead of just hear about it. Many students struggle with learning if the material is introduced only verbally. Seeing the effect would benefit those students who learn visually and physically.
