FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Slater's classroom raised $459
This project is fully funded
My class of third graders would like funding for a published poet to visit our classroom for a series of 45-minute lessons so that the children can be inspired to write one or two poems each visit and compile them into an anthology.
Our school has for many previous years been funded for a Poets in the Schools project. This year our funder had their resources cut, so that left us without the grant money for this program. Each classroom teacher is trying to raise funds for his or her individual classroom.
These children love poetry. It lets their imaginations run free, it explores their feelings, it rewards them for taking risks and playing with words. The results are delightful and the skills they acquire carry over into their other writing projects. Below is a poem inspired by our gifted poet in residence last spring:
The Horn of a Unicorn
The shell remembers when it was for rent.
It remembers a night when a unicorn found it and put it on his head.
It remembers a spring when a poor man blew in it to make music and he became famous.
The shell remembers a feeling she had running from a bully.
It remembers hearing the sound of the soft peaceful ocean.
It remembers dreaming about her family.
Now it gives a living home to my dream come true.
Lydia, age 8
We are requesting funds for 5 sessions with the poet. Thank you.
