Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come from a diverse range of backgrounds and neighborhoods around Los Angeles. Their predominantly marginalized communities, overwhelmingly low-income and immigrant, often go unmentioned in school curriculum and especially in the creative writing and poetry students are exposed to.

The poetry books in this project will help students see that poetry belongs to all people, regardless of their backgrounds.

Having these books in my classroom library will help engage more students in reading poetry and also help shift their understanding of poetry from a stuffy and technical craft to a living, breathing art form and powerful way of expressing oneself in the world.
