This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As we begin the school year, I want to start with a text that immediately engages students while also serving as a foundation for developing their reading and writing skills. Bronx Masquerade offers a compelling structure and voice that will draw students in and provide a variety of entry points for discussion and analysis. Its mix of narrative and poetry makes it especially valuable as both a story and a model for student writing.

My hope is that students will use the poems and personal stories in the book as mentor texts for their own writing.

As part of this unit, students will craft personal narratives and poetry, culminating in a presentation where they share their work. Having strong, relatable examples from Bronx Masquerade will support their growth and confidence as writers, particularly as they experiment with voice, form, and self-expression.

My 9th graders are energetic, curious, and just beginning to find their footing in high school. Many are fledgling readers and writers, and I meet them where they are, guiding them to grow in each discipline. This unit will center on themes of identity and community—concepts that resonate deeply with students at this stage—and Bronx Masquerade provides a rich, authentic lens through which to explore them.
