My Students

Sometimes my fourth and fifth graders are hilarious writers. Other times, their stories are heartbreaking. These young authors are full of enthusiasm and commitment but short on printer ink!

Most of my students are English language learners from low-income families.

They write almost daily as part of our writers' workshop program, drafting, revising, discussing, illustrating and ultimately desktop publishing their finished pieces which are bound and shelved in our classroom library for other students to read. The program's emphasis is on the writing process. We brainstorm for writing ideas and discuss how to develop characters. Students experiment with literary devices like figurative language and flashback. They typically spend a few weeks revising a piece they decide to publish and presenting multiple drafts to the class for feedback and critique.

My Project

Students explore a variety of genres, from memoir to magical realism, from science fiction to poetry, and mini-lessons on grammar, mechanics and style are tucked into the seams of the workshop, on an as-needed basis. Studies on second language acquisition and academic achievement all point to a key variable when it comes to student success: relevance. If kids can't relate to the subject matter, they often feel alienated, so I make sure writers' workshop is a safe place for students to choose what they want to write about, and I tailor the lessons to fit around the themes and subject matter the students decide to explore. Unfortunately, the cost of printing my students' books can become prohibitive, especially since I print out a copy of each book for the student author to take home as well as a copy to keep in our classroom library. We need ink so we can print our writing.

A semester's supply of print cartridges would make it possible for my students to turn the stories that mean the most to them into real books with pages that turn and covers that entice.

Your help will ensure that my students have the opportunity to glow with pride and a sense of accomplishment as they watch their words and illustrations emerge from the printer as polished works of art, worthy of a spot on the shelf next to literary heroes like J.K. Rowling and Roald Dahl.
