Poetry Month Supplies & Prizes: Promoting Creativity in High School

Help me give my students supplies and prizes for participating in our April Poetry Month creative challenges!

My Project

National Poetry Month is coming up in April! Teaching students poetry, and encouraging them to not panic when they see a poem, is probably the toughest part of teaching English. A few summers ago, I attended a workshop for teachers put on by The Poetry Foundation in conjunction with an organization called O, Miami; this experience opened up my eyes to the joys of poetry!

During this workshop, I learned about how O, Miami incorporates poems into the lives of everyday Miamians throughout Poetry Month, and how each year, this celebration grows bigger and more popular; my hope is that by including small, “bite-sized” creative poetry activities throughout the month of April, students will build a love for poetry--or at least a small appreciation for it--across the entirety of our school.

My English Honor Society students will take the lead on this event, and these incentives will encourage student participation in the Poetry Month event!

The pens and highlighters will be used by students to create their poems for submission to the different poetry month challenges. All of our poetry challenges involve some kind of visual art element as well, which we hope will encourage even more students to participate! For example, in one challenge, students write “Zip Odes,” which are tribute poems to their hometown. As part of this poem, students decorate/draw on their page a visual representation of the poem they’ve written in a way than celebrates the content of their poem.

For each poem a student submits, they will receive some kind of incentive. At the end of each poetry "challenge," a few winners will receive an additional incentive. Please help us make poetry an integral part of our school, and a fun, school-wide activity! Help us celebrate Poetry Month throughout the month of April!
