Poetry Month Participation: Rewarding Students for Going Above and Beyond
Help me give my students incentives, like candy and snacks, to participate in the Poetry Month celebration throughout the month of April.

My Project
National Poetry Month is coming up in April! Teaching students poetry and encouraging them to not panic when they see a poem, is probably the toughest part of teaching English. This summer, I attended a workshop for teachers, put on by The Poetry Foundation, in conjunction with an organization called O, Miami, that opened up my eyes to the joys of poetry.
During this workshop, I learned how O, Miami incorporates poems into the lives of everyday Miamians throughout Poetry Month each year, and how each year, this celebration grows bigger and more popular; my hope is that by including small, “bite-sized” creative poetry activities throughout the month of April, I hope to build a love for poetry--or at least a small appreciation for it--across the entirety of our school.
My English Honor Society students will take the lead on this event, and these incentives will encourage student participation in the Poetry Month event! Most students can be motivated by food, so here, their motivation to participate comes in the form of candy and snacks. For each poem a student submits as part of the celebration, they will receive some kind of incentive. At the end of each poetry "challenge," the winner will receive an additional incentive.
Please help us make poetry an integral part of our school, and a fun, school-wide activity, rather than something overwhelming and scary. Help us celebrate Poetry Month throughout the month of April!
