Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are Intelligent, engaged, passionate learners. Where they are given room to explore ideas in their reading, writing and research, they flourish! Many are at a special turning point where they are asking “Why?” And looking at the world and their inner selves for the answers. A traditional education doesn’t normally support this search, but I find that self-selected books help. Reading about people with both similar and different experiences, and finding truths in books often interrupt expectations because they create questions that lead to more questions. This search is vital.

My students are developing their interests and passions in a way that will take them beyond the classroom after high school.

They are interested in the world at large, and in social justice. They want to know how to make the world a better place.

My Project

It's been almost a year and a half since most of my students have held a book of any kind in their hand. In a regular year, I have students (10th and 12th grade) tell me its been a year or more since they read a whole book and longer since they enjoyed reading. I relish offering these students a variety of options to read in my classroom library, but I have found that often the most reliable entry point back into the joy of reading is through poetry.

There is so much good poetry that speaks to my students and doesn't require Shakespearean levels of interpretation or prior knowledge.

And for many books of poetry the number of words on a page is not daunting, but rather seems doable for a reluctant reader. Once students realize reading for pleasure can be about self discovery or emotional experiences they've had too, they are hooked. I stopped counting the number of times Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur was the genesis of a pile of reading for students in my classroom. And what's more, once someone finishes a book of poetry, they realize they just read a book! And that they can do it again. And inevitably their reading lives evolve and deepen and by the end of the year they are reading self-selected novels.

This new pile of poetry books will help me re-connect reading to my students this year. I have selected a variety of themes from a diverse group of writers. I am thrilled to be able to share them with my students from Day 1 in September.
