My students need poetry books to inspire their writing minds.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I try to provide many opportunities for my 9th grade and 12th grade English class students to discover poetry. They read poetry and write it. I also advise the Poetry Out Loud program--a national poetry recitation competition.
My students are bright, creative, and bound for college.
Unlike many successful district 2 high schools, we are a nonselective unscreened school that does not put geographic restrictions on our enrollment. We take anybody! Most students come from all over Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.
My Project
As 11th graders, my students read a wide variety of American poetry, culminating in writing their own poems to be performed at a poetry slam. As their 12th grade English teacher, I assigned Willie Perdomo's "Where a Nickel Costs a Dime" as a summer reading assignment. They read his collection of poems and wrote their own 10-poem collection chapbooks. These new poetry books are for my classroom library and will extend their reading of contemporary poets of color.
Students of color need books that are windows and mirrors--books that show reflections of themselves and books that expand their view of other people and cultures different than their own.
These books meet both those needs in my classroom.
