My Students

Think of your favorite song. Chances are, the lyrics were originally written as a poem. My students need books and instruments to explore poetry to help build their character.

My students live in a high poverty neighborhood in a major city of Pennsylvania.

88% qualify for free or reduced lunches. I teach just under 500 students who love every second of music class. This year, my school is launching a character building program. I plan to include music and poetry in this school wide plan.

My Project

My students love to sing, play instruments, and dance. By teaching poetry through music, I hope to expand upon these skills as well as teach them much needed character skills. I plan to have my students arrange musical accompaniments and dances to poetry (that is geared towards character building). o do this, they will need various sound effect instruments to aurally represent words as well as two books of poetry.

My students are passionate about music.

By starting this unit at my school, I hope they become passionate about being better learners as well as better citizens. This will give them a major creative outlet to explore musical styles as well as character building. After all, they have to work together!
