This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Picture a group of kids who are growing up in homeless housing. That's my room. As one of the few states that guarantee family housing, our shelters are overflowing. The state has purchased temporary apartment housing near our school, and well over half of our population is in our area for a short, undetermined amount of time. With 100% of our student body receiving free breakfast, lunch, and snack, school is their safe place.

Despite obstacles that would be too much for many adults, they remain to be bright, funny, and fun-loving, and they really enjoy the safety and security that school brings.Our school not only keeps the kids safe, but it's a place where learning comes alive and is so fun!

My Project

As the generation we teach grows, their access to the digital world does, too; at a speed unlike any other generation. Gone, truly, are the days of sharing information in a newsletter every Friday. To keep up with what's happening in class, what we're learning, and to give a voice to a 4th grade group of learners, we'd love to start a weekly podcast.

Here students can share audio stories from the week, curriculum hot spots (if we're learning area model, a student can walk a listener through how to use area model) and perhaps most importantly, give a voice to youth who have opinions and feelings about their greater social world.

Students will learn to use MAC technology and microphones to record and edit their weekly podcasts. The case for the macbook air is imperative as all 18 students will be using it at some point and the longevity of the device is important. Finally, our project looks to turn a part of our 21st century learning space - into our recording studio - by adding sound proofing panels to the back part of our classroom. Think of it like the post office center in a kindergarten, upgraded to modern times with real working technology. Giving students access to this type of digital storytelling serves to both empower and educate them on safe use of technology as well.
