I teach middle level students who are learning English as a new language. The majority come from the Philippines and various island nations of Micronesia. They need language support to be successful in their regular classes, as well as navigating their new environment.
I believe that language learners learn best through peer collaboration with hands-on, visual learning opportunities.
I aim to provide students a lot of opportunities to interact with the core content they are learning. I also strongly believe in arts-integration as a powerful tool for learning.
My Project
My students are English learners. They need authentic practice in speaking English in order to increase their test scores in the speaking domain of the annual test they have to take.
Podcasting is an engaging and authentic way for them to tell their stories, share their culture, and practice speaking English.
With this microphone bundle, and free curriculum from National Public Radio, my students will be empowered to create a podcast that we can share with our school, community, and even state. There is a local public radio station that might broadcast our published podcast and I can even reach out to our state NPR affiliate. I'm very excited about this project and I can't wait to get started!
