Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our elementary school is a very dynamic and diverse group of students who are excited to learn every day. We challenge our students every morning to do their very best. As a school community, academic success is the ladder for our students to climb towards their unlimited potential.
Our elementary school is a Title I school with many students who are very low in socioeconomic status including over 90% receiving free or reduced-price lunch at school.
Although in an impoverished area of the city, our school aims to be a very tight-knit community providing a safe and secure learning environment for our students to thrive in. Many of our students speak languages other than English at home so our staff strives to provide adequate opportunities for English language development. The teachers and students of our school are dedicated towards common goals of high academic achievement, personal responsibility, and becoming positive role models for our peers.
My Project
My students are in need of multiple pocket portfolios to keep all of their learning organizers in one place. Our classroom is full of learning in a variety of formats including practice, notes, organizers, anchors, works in progress and final products. A second grader maintaining their work in an organized format can be a challenge. I strive to teach my students how to think through problems and find an efficient solution. The portfolio having multiple folders for each subject will problem solve how to store their work in cubbies or drawers for students especially those struggle with organizational skills.
We have shifted from a traditional classroom to one that's flexible with choice.
Our class went from uneven desks and chairs to one with multiple tables, chairs, stools, and learning spaces. Students can work during the day where they choose and having one place where all of their work can be collected would be amazing. They would still have color coding for subject areas but it will collected in one spot with these portfolio folders. I want my students to be focused on their learning and now where their missing work may have disappeared too.
