My Students

My students love to play learning games using pocket charts, but it's difficult to play when the chart stand always falls down! Despite the layers of tape, the chart we currently have breaks apart and is just unsafe. I want my students to be able to engage in learning without unnecessary obstacles.

My students are the joy and light of my day.

They come to school eager to learn and are the happiest students. I have a class that is bursting at the seams. I have 32 students in my all-day kindergarten class. Three quarters of my students are English Language Learners. My students come from Somalia, Nepal, Burma, Mexico, Russia, and many other places. I have only eight students who speak English as their first language. My students are a diverse community of learners who share the same thirst for knowledge. Over 90% of my students live below the poverty line. Their lives are impacted by socioeconomic and language barriers. The greatest thing about my students is that my students believe in themselves and they have determination to learn and "get smart." Our school is a major part of the community. It is a safe place where students get food, knowledge and love and support.

My Project

I am requesting 1 rolling easel so they can see the board to learn reading and writing skills as well as 4 classroom bins. I imagine using my rolling easel to hang pocket charts for my students to use with interactive games. A lot of math time focuses on high-interest learning games where students work with friends to solve number puzzles or matching games. My students will be able to use the easel without fearing that it will fall apart like the easel we currently use. Our class's high ELL numbers require me to focus our English speaking skills during every subject of the day. I write up sentence stems for students to use as language models. These sentence stems encourage students to feel comfortable speaking and teach proper English syntax. A rolling chart will be helpful in my big class too. There is often not enough physical space to fit everyone on the rug so I have to maneuver my easel to different angles so everyone can see the board. The wheels on this easel will help make learning accessible to my huge group of students. The large surface will help my students see as I model writing.

This product will make a difference to my students because it will allow them to see important lessons that I demonstrate on the board.

Students will have access to wipe off markers using the storage bins below. I know that my students will be safer with a new easel that is structurally sound instead of the old chart stand that I have. This gift will last for many years because it is strong. I look forward to students being engaged because they can see and interact with the large surface.
