This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is "newcomer center" for high school students new to the district who have little or no English. For these students they are in a new environment surrounded by a sea of unfamiliar language. I am the Science Department Leader at my school. A Biology teacher who volunteered to co-teach a section of Biology with an EL specialist has seen this tool in action and is jumping up and down with excitement about how this can really increase the impact she has with these kiddos.

If you've ever traveled abroad without knowing the language you know how scary it can be to ask questions or communicate what you need - Now imagine you are 15 years old, alone, and in an unfamiliar place.

This PocketTalk can break through all of the communication barriers between teacher and student and allow students to ask questions and get answers they truly understand. This allows for two-way communication without waiting for each speaker to type what they want to say into a translator, speeding up communication and allowing for teachers with no knowledge of the student's primary language to effectively teach.

Your funding of this tool will help a classroom full of students who are struggling through the learning a language AND processing subject matter content delivered in that language at the same time. A PocketTalk will allow her or her co-teacher to move about the classroom, having one-on-one conversations with these students in real time and allowing them to truly gain some understanding of the subject matter. Help us help these students as they adapt to a new language and culture!
