This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are just moving up from elementary school and are learning to be responsible for managing their own belongings. I emphasize to students the need to be organized for each class.
My students are not all able to purchase some of the most basic student supplies.
I want them to learn to be responsible for all of their work, and to do that they must be organized. I want them to have a dedicated folder just for Health and PE class.
My Project
When students have to bring papers back and forth between home and school, they need a special place to keep papers for each class. My students work from packets and worksheets. I cannot collect them every day because while we start them in class, they often finish them at home. They need a way to safely keep track of their work.
I also teach students that it is important to hold on to all graded work until they have seen a grade report from the teacher, so that they can verify that what is in the teacher's gradebook is accurate. However, if they find a mistake, but cannot produce the completed, graded work, then they cannot prove to the teacher that a correction is needed.
I believe that keeping a folder for each class is a simple start to organization.
The habit of keeping work until grades are verified is a valuable habit at every age. I have found over my 26 years of teaching that students who keep their work organized do more homework, turn in more work, and get better grades.
