Pocket Microscopes to Enhance Student Nature Observations and Journaling

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students at my school visit and nature journal at a nearby wildlife refuge 40 times each year. At the refuge, students ask scientific questions about the world around them through a series of nature journaling activities. Students observe distant objects with binoculars, track animal activity with plaster molds, and test water quality with special test strips. This year, I want to open up the microscopic natural world through the use of portable hand-held microscopes.
Students engaged in regular, sustained nature journaling could experience an increase in literacy and critical thinking skills, an increase in understanding and connections to their native landscapes, and a decline in anxiety and depression (source: Nature Journaling in the High School Classroom, The American Biology Teacher).
Connecting students with nature is already a priority at my school. Now, I am requesting specific tools like these pocket microscopes to enhance the learning experience.
This request will provide a hand-held microscope to each student. One-to-one devices are essential so all students have equal and equitable access to nature.
