PNC Help Me Learn With Legos!

My students need Lego building blocks with figures and bendable receiving rolls so that they can build a transportation station in the library.

My Students

Students at this school are hard working learners. They may come from homes that are struggling, 73% of them are on free or reduced lunch, but that doesn’t stop them from wanting an education. The students are multiracial, 40% White, 31% Hispanic, 23% Black, 3% Asian, and 3% combination of races. This creates an environment of acceptance and tolerance for all. My challenge is to level the playing field so that students with less opportunities are able to compete academically with those who have more opportunities.

Creating learning experiences for these students is the best part of my job, the joy on their faces as they are discovering something new and integrating knowledge into their “personal toolkits” is priceless.

In my learning environment I endeavor to set them up to win in an environment that is inviting and comfortable. Sometimes that means school supplies, mending clothing, a bandaid, or a kind word. I believe this will not only help the student focus, but will also produce higher level of work from the student. Teaching these young learners is a privilege.

My Project

My youngest students are crazy about Legos and I want to use that passion to help them learn about community and transportation. They can learn about wheels, the way vehicles move, and race cars through the community created with Legos.

This project will create Lego wall in the library where students can explore movement and transportation, cars, and community and so students can come in early before school to work on challenges.

Students will use this as a way to expand their imagination and also build on what they learn in the classroom. They will use the bend blocks to create trackways on which to build with the other blocks. Those tracks can move up and around the walls. That's why our students love to come to the library - to READ and to explore their interests about science, technology, engineering, and math.
