My students need reference materials that reflect the current findings in the scientific community, including "Plate Tectonics, Volcanoes, and Earthquakes," "Earth and Its Moon," and "Astronomy: Understanding the Universe."
Just as Archimedes shouted, "Eureka!" in jubilation of his scientific discovery today's students are still excited to discovery how and why things work. But students need current material that reflect the ongoing discoveries especially when it comes to the scientific community.
What makes us special is that our school serves a diverse and high poverty population.
For many of my students the school library is the only place that they have access to books. Because of their lack of access to books that are interesting to them, many of my students are 2-3 grade levels behind in reading. And as you know, research has shown that the more time spent reading, the better reader a child will become. I would like to provide them with books that will spark their interest in science which will in turn help them to become better readers and science explorers.
My Project
Since taking over the library in September of last year, our circulation has increased as I have been able to “tune in” to what the students want to read and learn about. My students love science. My dream is that every student will always be reading a book they like and are able to access. This is the key to inspiring a life-long love of reading and learning! I am starting to make a positive impact on these underprivileged students, but I just don’t have the funding necessary to buy books that reflect current theories, research, and findings within the scientific community.
In the past our school has produced students who have shown a love for science like space shuttle Commander Dick Scobee.
But sadly we have seen that love fade as the materials have become dated and do not draw the interest of today's students. With your donation Cascade will receive materials that reflect new findings and theories within the scientific community which will help us continue to produce top rate scientific thinkers.
