My Project
Plushies, with the accompanying books, help students get enthusiastic about reading, especially when they recognize the storybook character, such as the mouse in Give a Mouse a Cookie, or the whimsical Narwhal and Jelly series. Our EL students cannot always read books at their grade level, so they tend to gravitate toward books that are easier to read and have been read to them repeatedly.
Our EL students feel happy and content with these tried and true books with famous characters, so it makes sense that adding plushies to their silent reading time would add a cozy and comforting layer to this part of our school day.
Not only do students rush to the box with the series of books in it, but they identify with the characters, such as Pete The Cat and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Our special education students would especially appreciate the plushies, as we can use them during our sing-a-long time, for those students who have a hard time reading actual books, but can sing along to the words from their favorite stories.
