My Students

Students at our high school are special because of their diverse backgrounds, skills, and enthusiasm for learning. Over 60% of our students identify as non-white. Our district is the third most diverse in the state and qualifies for 100% free lunch. Many of my students are English Language Learners or have learning disabilities and require differentiated and individualized lessons. Resources in low income, urban public school districts are slim, and many of my students have very few resources at home. And this is where the English Language Arts classroom I strive to create and maintain comes into play each day for each student. It is my honor and delight to see my students find their voices and voice their ideas, insights, queries, observations as we read and write about the themes that confound, rile, inspire, and unite us as citizens of this good and great world.

My Project

Tartuffe will round out our play series. The setting, characters, plot, theme range and variety of these three plays: Othello by William Shakespeare, Tartuffe by Moliere, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Dale Wasserman from the novel by Ken Kesey speak not to our differences, but to the commonalities that unite us.

My students already have shown an astonishing interest in the art of persuasion and this "Villains in Drama" project will help enrich their rhetorical analysis experiences with the printed word that comes alive in oral performance.

Our social climate is fraught with sloppy, slippery rhetoric. I want to open my students' eyes, minds, hearts, and mouths to the glorious language of truly good writing. The best way to improve writing is to increase reading ability--by reading more. I hope these plays will continue to help my students grow stronger not only in reading but also thinking about the structure of elegant language as the manifestation of thought.

The play is the thing--most definitely. And, there are few things more terrifyingly delicious than really good villains.
