My Students

I am an experienced teacher of 12 years, at 3rd-5th grade. I retired early for family and health reasons, and now after four years, I am excited to be back in the classroom. When leaving teaching four years ago, I donated all my supplies, classroom management items, and books to other teachers. I was hired to teach a 1st/2nd grade combination class a week ago and realize I have nothing to create the classroom environment that I believe is best for my students' learning experience.

I have some amazing students.

They come to me with such diverse backgrounds and abilities. I get excited to see these little faces light up and hear their voices share what they know, like, and feel. I love helping students grow in knowledge and social skills. I believe every student can learn and is valued. I have one physically handicapped student, and I want to make every accommodation needed for this little one, as well as the rest of the class.

I want my classroom to be inviting, comfortable, and a positive learning environment. We are a small community of friends, and there have been some pretty amazing acts of kindness and caring happening daily.

My Project

I am teaching four first graders and 16 second graders. I believe having technology at our fingertips, at all times, without competing for a time slot in the computer lab, would be amazing. We are only able to get in the computer lab once a week.

With these Kindle Fire tablets, I can give students a personalized lesson in all subject areas and get a full assessment of their progress.

I am so excited just thinking of how much learning can happen when I can reinforce learning with individualized lessons that we are focusing on each week. A huge bonus is knowing my students will be engaged even more, as technology is the way of the world.

We are learning to code this year and a tablet will help them understand how it works and give them the stepping stones to computer programming in their upcoming school years.

I plan to use these tablets in whole group and centers. I can imagine creating lessons in science or social studies that allow students to explore high-interest science topics or the United States or world cultures, as they move about the room, with their tablets, to answer questions about the subject.

I am new to this district and have realized that all classrooms in this little school have Chromebooks or tablets, and my class is the only one that does not. I want my class to get plugged in, too.
