Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a diverse neighborhood that is high in poverty, but they are enthusiastic about learning and growing. I have students who are missing many basic skills but are willing to learn and work hard.
Enthusiastic and excited when they walk into the classroom, all they need is a smile, a greeting, and a teacher who is willing to get them engaged.
I'm that teacher, but now I need the tools to engage them.
My classroom is a place where students are challenged, accepted, and welcomed, and throughout the year, we spend time debating, laughing, crying, and connecting over literature. Unfortunately, they don't always have the necessary tools or materials that we need to take it to the next level of greatness.
My Project
Students nowadays are surrounded by the answers they need to everything, right in their pockets! They are constantly being bombarded by media, photos, texts, and various items by just the swipe of a message.
How can I compete with the temptation of the answers or distractions right in their pockets?
Suddenly it hit me... if I gave the students a reason to put their phones down, I could have their undivided attention for 47 minutes and they would think I was helping them!
Hence, the idea of a charging station in my classroom. Students will use these USB chargers and charging ports to plug in their cell phones. On the chalkboard stand will be the rules for the station-- once you are plugged in, you stay that way until the bell or your phone is sentenced to cell phone jail for the duration of the day!
With this plan, I can have students focused on the lesson and not the daily gossip that's floating around social media. My biggest chatty Cathy's will be dying to hook up to the charging station because their frequent cell phone sneaks drains the battery quickly. Talk about a win-win for Mrs. T!
