Plentiful Poetry for Reading and Listening

My students need a variety of poetry books by authors who will grab them, voice their feelings, work wonders with words.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Healy's classroom raised $870

My Students

Every teenager feels deeply, as if for the first time in history, a variety of emotions and experiences. Poetry speaks to these experiences and the intensity of being alive and growing up.

My students are amazing artists who bring creativity with them to school every day.

They dance, sing, light, paint, play, act and learn at our public arts high school. They come from a busy city full of different types of people and a spectrum of art and ideas. They dress colorfully and find their own path.

My Project

These poetry books will replenish our waning collection of verse. Students will have the opportunity to peruse, read, read to each other, listen to and enjoy the poetry in these books. They will use them as a first resource for a poet study and for emulation - their own creative writing. The books will offer students a range of voices so they can find a voice that speaks to them or expresses their feelings and their experiences. Furthermore, these books will be a resource for me to showcase a range of verse - from traditional sonnets to beat poetry to contemporary free verse on any number of topics.

Ultimately my students need empathy and literacy - the ability to understand different people and their experiences and the ability to articulate and comprehend ideas through words.

Poetry through its flexible, evolving form and close connection to emotions is the perfect medium for developing student empathy and creating an awareness of the power of language. Please give my students the gift of language and feeling.
