I am a first grade teacher at Kohn Elementary on the south side of Chicago. We believe it is very important to read daily. My students have time after their work is finished to get up and grab a pillow or a rug and a great book and find a spot in the room to read silently. They also have a designated time once a day, when they will silently read or buddy read. The students understand the importance of reading at home. There are just a few problems. A lot of students do not have a book at home let alone a sufficient library. I love to send books home for someone to read to them but there is not always time for someone to read to my students. They need to be able to take home books that they can read fluently to build their self-confidence. If I was provided books that ranged from different levels all of my students could build their phonemic awareness, build their sight word vocabulary and their self-confidence. Another problem is with our classroom library, is nice but it is not where I want it to be. I have books for my higher-level readers and my middle-level readers. I do not have enough books for my lower-level readers to read by themselves. Our classroom reading skills would really benefit from having more leveled books for each child. It would be nice to send home a book everyday that the student could read at home without any help. We you ahead of time for your time and consideration.
