Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inspiring. They are all blind or visually impaired. My partner teacher and I have ten students who are learning to read and write Braille. Many of my students are from low-income homes, and over 80% of the students in our district receive free or reduced-price lunch. We are constantly challenging our students to step out of their comfort zones. This can be very scary for a student with a visual impairment.
My goal is to help my students develop a skill set that includes braille literacy, technology, and self-advocacy so that they can be successful in school, post-secondary education and eventually the workforce.
My Project
We have been receiving an unusual amount of rain in Southern California the past few weeks. I have noticed that several of my students have been absent every time it was raining. When I asked them about their absences they shared that they need rain gear. Their absences are starting to add up and I am worried about the effects on their educations.
My students really need rain coats, gloves, and umbrellas so they can stay dry during this unusually wet winter.
My students are visually impaired and cannot afford to miss school on account of the rain. Thank you for your consideration.
