We are a small middle school, serving grades 6-8 in southeastern North Carolina. Our district is very rural and largely made up of agricultural communities. Our students really don't understand what harassment and bullying are, and that will cause them great problems as they get older. They have a very hard time understanding that the playful touching, tapping, and horsing around at age 16 becomes something very serious. In North Carolina it usually means going to the jail until a guardian can come for them. Most of our students have grown up together and have gone to school together. Now as they become teenagers the play takes on a much more serious meaning. A friendly touch can now be taken to mean a lot more. This came true the other day for a student who waited in the jail until their mother could come get them. When I said, "Your age now brings on different consequences for your actions." The response "Your NOT kidding!" What I am asking the donors for is help in providing another way to try to get this across to our students. I am requesting a pair of videos from a company that I have used many times. The first one asks why do we ignore bullying and what can we do to stop it? The second addresses sexual harassment, something that we wish didn't happen, but does all too often. We talk about these issues in classes and have the sheriff in to talk to the students, but sometimes a video made with actors their age has a bigger impact. Thank you for your consideration.
