Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have had a hydroponic tower in my classroom since 2016. Every student in the school watches and marvels at how the 28 plants grow (or not grow) week to week. All students comment about the differences they see and ask questions to further their understanding of how plants grow in soil vs. hydroponically.
There is also a group of dedicated 4th and 5th grade students that work with me afterschool to take care of the tower.
They monitor the water, nutrients, lights and health of the various plants. As a just reward for their efforts, they eat from the tower. And they eat!!! Favorites are rainbow chard, bok choy, and arugula.
The problem is that many of our plants grow really well. With the lighting system we have now, the lights are fixed and the plants grow into them and burn. The new system we are asking for has flexible arms so as the plants grow, we can move out the lights to avoid burning. This in turn means less burned veggies to throw away and more food to eat!
