I teach third grade in an elementary school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Our school is a title one school. All of our children get free lunch and most of them come from low income families.
When it comes to writing, the children simply hate it. Many of them hate it because it is too hard for them and they struggle with the simplest skills. I want them to enjoy writing as much as I did growing up. This year the children will be working hard on passing their citywide exams, as they do every year. But, this year the city-wides are going to be different. They have added a writing section to the exam. Not only are the children unfamiliar with this part, but so are the teachers. I want to prepare the children as much as I can, and at the same time have them enjoy writing.
I am requesting some creative and fun writing materials from Lakeshore Learning, including their Instand Writing Center, which includes prompts and activities to provide young writers help in developing styles, with tips on capitalization, punctuation, spelling and overused words. I am also requesting the How to Write Activity Series, which gives help with rhyme and rhythm, developing original characters, paragraph and sentence construction and research. Addtional sets of writing prompt materials help generate ideas, themes and literary genres.
