Please Help Urban Students Learn About Growing Plants
My students need a portable plant cart with a humidity cover to grow plants under different environmental conditions. We do not have access to an outside area to grow plants.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine learning through hands-on experience instead of reading from an outdated textbook. Science is about learning through trial and error, testing your hypothesis, and retesting the results of an experiment. Students need to experience these things in order to better understand the world around them.
I teach an amazing group of ninth grade students.
These students come from diverse social and economical backgrounds. The majority of these students live in poverty.
These student are eager to learn and many of them have told me that they would like to work in the medical field as either nurses or forensic scientists when they get older.
My school shares the building with two other schools, so space is in short supply. Because many teachers share their classroom with two other teachers, all equipment in the classroom must be portable. This effects science classes in particular since labs must be short in design, so that it doesn't interfere with another class. This usually restricts labs to be paper based, instead of hands-on.
My Project
I have requested a portable plant cart with a humidity cover to grow plants under different environmental conditions. We do not have access to an outside area to grow plants.
There are many experiments that the students can use the plant cart for. Students can run many different experiments concerning the environment to see how plants are affected by environmental change. They can learn about genetics by recreating a classic experiment done by Gregor Mendel which involved cross breeding pea plants and noting their characteristics. Best of all, the cart is reusable, which means that the cart will be used for future classes.
In science classes, students need to do activities that are hands-on.
Not all students learn by reading from a textbook. Doing laboratory experiments not only helps bring the theory to the student in a hands-on approach, but it also allows students to exchange ideas with each other and open up new ways of thinking for all the students.
More than half of students from low‑income households
