My students need a classroom library that contains books and phonics cards that focus on short and long vowel sounds to enhance decoding skills.

This project is fully funded

The inability to decode words affects all academic areas of student success. It also does not accurately measure what a student knows. I am a dedicated second grade teacher at a public school that is located in a very high-need community. I work in one of the roughest neighborhoods in the city. Students, on a daily basis, are faced with family struggles and challenges that even some adults may have not experienced.

I teach 29 wonderful students that are at many different reading levels. My students range from an emergent beginning readers to 4th grade reading levels. I would like for each of my students to become confident, fluent readers by the end of second grade. I teach reading in small differentiated groups of 5-6 students. Many of my students have not mastered consonant blends, short, and/or long vowel sounds.

Having books and phonics cards that are specifically phonics based in our classroom library will help to enhance the phonics skills taught during reading time. Students will be able to apply what is taught during the reading lessons to an entertaining library book, helping them to read with ease and boost self confidence.

Your help will ensure that my students become successful readers. The mastery of decoding at a second grade level foreshadows their ability to summarize, sequence, draw conclusions, and make connections to any given reading passage. These skills are heavily utilized and strengthened throughout middle school.
