Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our urban public high school is as diverse racially, culturally, and economically as our large metropolitan city.

Our student population is by majority Hispanic (70%), followed by Asian, White, Black, Pacific Islander, and various other groups.

Almost all my students classify in our state's lowest economic category, which qualifies them for financial assistance such as reduced lunch and free tutoring programs. For nearly 50% of my students, the primary language that their family speaks at home is not English. Many of our students were classified as ESL students (English as a Second Language), when they began high school, but have now been reclassified as English Proficient. Due to funding cuts, science classes at our public high school have recently increased to average sizes of 44 students per class. We are not a private school, so in order to give these young students the best college prep environment, our science lab programs truly survive from donations and grants.

My Project

Crucibles motivate students to Chemistry? These simple bowl containers appear uninspiring alone, but in beginning Chemistry, crucibles give students their first opportunity to work with fire; to heat substances to extremely high temperatures! Crucibles motivate students to do chemistry analysis labs.

At the start of my Chemistry class each September, students often ask "When will we get to use fire?

and "Why does this class have so much math in it, its a science class isn't it?" Well, once the time comes for crucible lab experiments each year, those questions are answered. For new 11th graders each year, General Chemistry is their first ever math-based, college prep science course. In most course outlines, the crucible lab is the first one in which students apply the Periodic Table to mathematically investigate the mole concept from an actual hands on lab analysis. As a pre-lab demo, I light up the blue Bunsen Burner flame, show them a crucible, use the tongs to place the crucible in the flame, and then carefully raise and close the crucible lid with the tongs. All these actions require that students develop some degree of skill in this lab. And for beginners...crucibles fall, then shatter, or crack. We are requesting a set of durable steel crucibles that can be used for many years to come.

Due to financial cuts, my school truly must rely on donations or grants to maintain the Chemistry lab experience for my students.

The few crucibles that we still have are 7-10 yers old. After time, they eventually rust, and crack. So we are in great need of a new set. Anything you can do to help sustain and improve our program will be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!
