Please Help Provide Basic Motion Detectors for Physics

My students need 5 basic motion detectors to use in order to conduct several modern Physics lab experiments.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Physics labs that study motion, distance, acceleration, and falling objects are among the most foundational labs for students. Beyond the traditional use of stopwatches and meter sticks, many modern labs now require motion detectors; sonar technology - which our school cannot afford for my classroom.

Our urban public high school is as diverse racially, culturally, and economically as our large metropolitan city.

Our student population is by majority Hispanic (70%), followed by Asian, White, Black, Pacific Islander, and various other groups. Almost all my students classify in our state's lowest economic category, which qualifies them for financial assistance such as reduced lunch and free tutoring programs. For nearly 50% of my students, the primary language that their family speaks at home is not English. Many of our students were classified as ESL students (English as a Second Language), when they began high school, but have now been reclassified as English Proficient. Since we are not a private school, our science lab programs truly survive from donations or grants-our state and local education funds are facing their worse cuts in over 20 years. Physics classes at our public high school have recently increased to average sizes of 42 students per class.

My Project

Much classic Physics experiment work done throughout history, required scientists like Galileo to conduct tests painstakingly for hours- like dropping objects from the Tower of Pisa or rolling a ball down different inclined planes, over and over, timing how long it takes for the object to travel different distances. Sonar motion detectors would add a new technological dimension to the students Physics lab work. As an object is rolled towards or away from the detector, the device records both the distance and position of the object, for every position up to 6 meters (6.5 yards)away. Sonar technology is now required by virtually all Physics lab manuals, including our newest Physics textbooks - from our lab texts, I have found 6 labs that we cannot do - they REQUIRE motion detectors! So far, I've had students try the labs manually - Galileo fashion - or I have omitted them. Sonar detectors will give students opportunities to interact with technology, preparing them for a modern college experience.

In order for me to update and modernize the Physics lab experience for my students, allowing them to interact with technology, I must rely on and survive on donations or grants.

We take good care of our science equipment at school, but generally electronic technology (like computers and home electronics) needs to be updated at least every five years or so. Currently our class has no motion detectors. Anything that you can do to help sustain and improve our program will be greatly appreciated!
