Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in a self-contained alternative program in the inner city for students with emotional disabilities. These students struggle to be successful in a traditional school setting, even with special education supports. We are housed in a regular district school in hopes that, with our support, our students can eventually transition back into the mainstream educational setting.
Most of my students need additional support due to their emotional disabilities from traumatic situations in their past that impact their academic progress in a traditional setting.
Research has shown that trauma changes the way that the brain works and impacts memory. As a result, our students have significant reading and math deficits that continue to impact their learning. These students have experienced or witnessed domestic violence, gun/gang violence in their neighborhoods, mental illness, and more. How can you focus on reading when you struggle to have your basic needs met or are worried about your siblings making it home safely from school? The good news is that research has also shown that with the right interventions, students who have experienced trauma can be successful.
My Project
My students need Chromebooks so they are able to access speech and language services. Speech is currently done via teletherapy, because we are unable to find enough speech therapists in the district. Our current laptops are over 5 years old, which causes them to freeze and disrupts the session. Our students have emotional disabilities due to past traumas and need incentives to encourage them to put forth their best effort at school. Part of our incentive program includes an earned "Fun Friday", during which time students are able to choose a snack. Some of our students also do not eat breakfast before they come to school. Most of our students come from low income households, and their families struggle to provide the necessary supplies, so we provide all of them for the students. This often comes out of the staff's pocket.
