Please Help our First Maker Space Dream Come True!
My students need glue, pin cushions, a 3D printer and a countdown timer to experience using fine motor skills, as well as expressing their creativity, unique abilities, and desire to make stuff using circuitry, sewing, woodwork, and 3D printing.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A couple of our school statistics include: 77% of our scholars are on free and reduced lunch and 51% of our scholars are English language Learners. Our teachers and administrators are beyond dedicated, and we celebrate every single scholar as a leader.
Despite their challenging backgrounds, our PreK - 5th grade scholars are are always full of curiosity!
One of them recently asked me, "Can we have a club where we just make stuff?" So here it is: we want them to be able to have as many hands-on "maker" experiences in school and life as possible!
My Project
The Maker Movement is a huge one that is currently sweeping the globe. It brings together adults and kids alike to solve problems, collaborate, take risks, and be proud of their design solutions and art.
We have already begun our Maker Club this year and the PK-5th grade students have been inspired to make pillows, bird houses, vases, soap (albeit with 1 smoking hot plate), and all sorts of other cool things we hadn't anticipated.
It is heartwarming to see such a variety of ages and genders of scholars working together to create!
We've been hindered by running out of basic supplies and we need various kinds of glue, a large countdown timer that can still be seen with goggles, and some of the more basic sewing supplies, like pin cushions. We would like to expand our reach to be able to finally get more into 3D printing with a 3D printer (one of the first machines all Maker Spaces should have), circuitry, woodwork (the students currently love to hot glue wood but we'd like to try to help them expand that), and to further our sewing skills (we got some textile scraps donated by a local business).
This is a space where scholars learn so many practical skills, as well as independence, responsibility, and how to unleash their creativity. Help us create a place where kids can make what they dream.
