Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students with moderate to severe disabilities are hard working, sweet, and enthusiastic young adults. Their disabilities range from down syndrome, autism, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and/or multiple health impairments. Their ages range from 18-22 years.

My students go to a vocational high school for students with moderate to severe disabilities and are on an alternate life skills curriculum.

This year, they are taking Life Skills strand to expose them to daily living skills toward being as independent as possible. This includes using public transportation, money management skills, reading skills to follow recipes to make basic meals, completing household chores and many other life skills experiences. When they complete this strand, students will be able to obtain paying or volunteer jobs such as housekeepers at hotels, making their parents/guardians happy by helping around the home, and moving on to having their own assisted living apartment with roommates. We are a Title I school and most of my students qualify for the free lunch program.

My Project

I have been assigned to teach the life skills strand this year. My principal has given me permission to convert the library into a functional home and I want it to look like a modern home and not a thrift shop based on donations to fill this space. The sofa and coffee table will be in our living room for students to keep clean. The beds and mattresses will be in the bedroom for students to practice making the beds . And the washing machine, stove, and microwave will be in our kitchen. Students will wash their uniforms and aprons using the washing machine. The stove and microwave will enable the students to make basic meals. I believe the best way to learn a skill is in an environment that is as natural as possible. Please help me make that possible!
