Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have 6 newcomer students in my 5th grade class this year. They are in various stages of learning English. As my instruction is in English, it is a struggle for them to understand. They meet with the Newcomer Teacher once a day for 45 minutes to learn basic English conversation and vocabulary. In my class, I pull them into a group to teach phonics.
These books will help them practice their short vowel letter sounds while building their confidence as readers.
During the whole class reading instruction, my newcomers are on their computers learning letters and sounds. However they rarely get the opportunity to read real books. With these books, they will have that opportunity. They can read independently or read to each other. They will also be able to bring them home to practice as homework.
As newcomers, they often feel left out of whole class instruction due to their lack of English. These readers will give them a chance to practice their English and give them a sense of belonging.
