This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a group of first graders who love learning and going to school. If you were to ask my students what their favorite subject is, you would get a wide range of answers including math, reading, social studies, science, and art. They are excited to develop their literacy skills.

Our school is very small but diverse.

Most of my students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school is a Title I school. Most of my first graders are Limited English Proficient. My students enjoy learning and have done well with learning the Common Core Curriculum.

My Project

My First graders need a variety of tools, such as Stack and Build Phonics Flip Books, Magnetic Word Building Boards, Word Building Tiles, Word Sliders, Phonics Instant Learning Centers, ink pads, a pocket chart, and an adjustable pocket chart stand to help them learn how to read. There are so many changes to our curriculum that we are desperately trying to get materials to help our children learn the concepts necessary to make them successful. Our children are now faced with the reality of having to read challenging short vowels, blends, digraphs, sight words, and long vowel words at​ the beginning of the year.

In order to help my children learn, I would love to have materials that are engaging and fun that they can use to build their knowledge at school

If you were to step into my classroom during workshop time, you would see children working in groups with various activities that help them to practice and perfect the skill of reading. I would love activities that allow children to build and "make words" in my workshop time and show their work in pocket charts in our room. My students need practice trying to distinguish which sound comes first, next, and last.
