Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine you are sitting in class in complete darkness and the teacher is teaching a lesson. You recognize some of what the teacher is saying but if only someone would turn the lights on so you can see what they are talking about. My students need you to turn the "lights" on so they can see too.
I am a public school teacher in New York City.
My students are from low income families and for a lot of them English is their second language. I also have several students with special learning needs. My students are very eager to learn in school. In order for them to be successful learners, they require visual aids to help them understand the material.
My Project
If I had an Elmo to use with my students, it would be like giving them the gift of sight in education for the first time. I would be able to explain and show the work to the students so that it would clear up a lot of misunderstandings that the students often have. Students, who are second language learners or special needs, are often very visual and them being able to see what is being expected of them is essential for them to be successful. You could make it possible to maximize the students' learning in my classroom. Imagine being responsible for giving students, who are second language learners and special needs, the same opportunity that other students have in more affluent neighborhoods. My students shouldn't be given any less of a chance to be successful due to lack of funding of public education in urban areas.
I am asking that you help me educate the children of the future.
If you supply me with the equipment, I can supply my students with the education they so richly deserve. They are working so hard to be successful and with your help, together, we can make their dreams come true.
