Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low socioeconomic school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
The minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me.
I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
My school district is closing the school library in the beginning of next year and it is important for me to continue to instill reading into my students. We are in a high needs district, with over 91% of our students receiving free and reduced-price lunch. Many of our children do not have books of their own. We need to have more books in our classrooms so that our children can develop habits that lead to life long reading. When reading feels good, the feeling stays with you and you want to read more! If I can bring new and interesting books to them, I might be able to pique their interest. I picked books that they are familiar with and would be interested in reading. Please help us fill our shelves in our classroom with books.
We will use the books to increase our fluency, pique our interest, and fill our minds with imaginations.
We will use the book bins to keep all of new books/old books organized.
I ordered a lot of chapter books because as the year goes on my student's fluency level is rising & they are so excited to read on a 3rd-5th grade level and be successful on accelerated reader assessments. I asked the students for suggestions on which books they would like to have in the classroom library and all of these books were selected by the children.
