My Students
"I am not a teacher, but an awakener" - Robert Frost.
It is my goal as an educator to provide a classroom environment which is holistically engaging, igniting a love of learning within my students and empowering them to be the masters of their own educations and futures.
I teach at an early childhood center in New Jersey.
My preschool classroom is an inclusion class, comprised of general and special education students. Some of my pupils are dual-language learners, learning to speak English for the first time. My team includes myself (the general education teacher), a special education teacher and a para-professional.
It is not uncommon to witness acts of kindness among our students. Social skills and community building have been key features of our lesson planning. Often they help each other, especially in the areas of language and communication. It is wonderful to see my English speaking students scaffolding vocabulary growth for those who are new to the language.
Rebus rhymes and sign language are also favorite activities among the class. With an emphasis on literacy, we have used these tools to aid us in transitions. Successes, students will often initiate these activities themselves and lead their classmates reading and signing songs.
My Project
Our new sand and water sensory area will support important learning across all domains and engage students in meaningful, hands-on activities. A magnet to young learners, this area will provide countless hours of purposeful lessons disguised as play. Students will practice language and social skills as they negotiate the sharing of materials and cooperative play. Vocabulary and communication will grow through these exchanges. Sensory items in the tables will soothe students and help them develop self-regulating skills. Sand and water play promotes many opportunities for math and science concepts to be explored. Quantity, motion, weight, sinking, floating, flow and gravity are just a few of the possible math and science experiences these tables will support. Finally, as students manipulate materials they will strengthen their fine motor muscles. This practice will help prepare them for writing. The possibilities for learning at the tables are endless and the area is invaluable.

A new sand and water sensory area will enhance our classroom by making it an exciting, attractive place to learn.
Having a beautiful, stimulating classroom lets children know that they are important and their work matters. Our current area consists of old materials in poor quality. It does not entice students to explore it and is less successful in providing all of the rich opportunities that await them. We are excited to beautify our classroom to support our students' love of learning.
