Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Read, read, read! That's what I want my 3rd graders to do, and truthfully, they want to. Often times, the reading materials available to my students are not high-interest enough. That's where the Scholastic News Weekly Readers come in. The articles within are interesting, non-fiction, and current!
I work at a title-1 school in which many (about 85%) of the students are English-learners and at a low socioeconomic level.
Many of them are on a free or reduced lunch program, but this does not mean they don't find joy in reading. Often times, my students do not have the variety of reading materials at home one needs in order to have a balanced and well-rounded knowledge base. Also, many of my students do not have access to a computer at home to research and read from current event articles and stories. I would love to give them another resource they can learn from and enjoy. I believe the Scholastic News Weekly Readers will be a valuable resource to add to my students' reading repertoire.
My Project
The articles within the scholastic readers are current and of high interest. First, I believe my students will enjoy reading them and learning from them. There are so many articles of information about things they've never even thought about. I think they will be extremely interested in the variety of stories and articles included, especially those based on science or history. Besides the knowledge they can gain from the weekly readers, I also see them as a valuable teaching tool. Students can use the articles as a close reading resource. They will be able to enrich their vocabulary. They will also be able to build their reading comprehension as they read the high interest text.
I would really appreciate any and all donations that will help build my students' literacy and love of reading.
This donation will provide the students with more reading materials at their levels, at the same time providing them with interesting stories and articles. I know they will learn about topics they've never even thought of before, thus enriching their lives for the better.
