I am the STEAM specialist at an elementary school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. STEAM is an educational approach that incorporates the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. STEAM is a new special that was added to our school this year (2023-2024). Every student in grades K-5 receives STEAM once per week for 45 minutes. Currently, we do not have a classroom and have been pushing into the classrooms throughout the building. Next year, our class will be moving into a trailer in our schoolyard.
I am requesting your help in providing a variety of manipulatives that will give students more opportunities for development, creation, and play.
Students learn in many different ways; STEAM gives every student the opportunity to learn in his or own way. We strive to use the Engineering Design Process. Some of the skills we aim to develop in STEAM are creative problem solving, teamwork, learning there are multiple ways to solve a problem, manipulating objects with hands, critical thinking, and perseverance during trial and error. The greatest skill that students learn to develop from STEAM is the idea of having a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset and the increase of confidence that stems from achievement.
Our STEAM classes would be very grateful and appreciative if we were able to expand our hands-on-manipulatives and building sets for creation, exploration, and play!
