My Project

Our calm down corner is an intentional space within the classrooms designed to help students regulate their emotions, reduce stress, and return to a state of calm. Our space is particularly important for students who experience anxiety, sensory overload, frustration, or emotional dysregulation. One of the key components that determine the effectiveness of our calm-down corner is the inclusion of comfortable seating. Comfortable seating is not just a luxury; it is a necessity that supports emotional regulation, physical relaxation, and overall well-being.

Comfortable seating helps create a safe and welcoming environment and plays a critical role in emotional regulation.

When a student is overwhelmed or upset, they are in a heightened emotional state. Hard, rigid chairs or cold flooring can contribute to discomfort and may even worsen the student’s ability to self-soothe. In contrast, soft cushions and bean bags provide a sense of security and warmth, helping the body and mind relax. Comfortable seating supports posture and relaxation, allowing the student to focus on calming down rather than being distracted by discomfort. These materials will help make the calm-down corner more effective in fulfilling its purpose.
