This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a third grade Gifted and Talented class in a culturally and economically diverse neighborhood. The special gifts and talents of the class range from above average academic, artistic, and/or musical abilities.
Gifted children are a unique population, with special needs that often times are neglected because funding is offered to disabled or at risk students who require extra services. In order to ensure the continual development of gifted students, supplemental activities in terms of enrichment projects are vital. Unfortunately, with the dramatic cuts in school budgets the class receives only basic school supplies at best such as paperclips, loose-leaf paper, construction paper, and glue.
Enrichment projects benefit the development of students’ gifts and talents in many ways. Enrichment projects allow students to apply and integrate the content of different subject areas. Learning therefore becomes relevant and useful as connections to life outside the classroom are established. Additionally, enrichment projects address many life skills such as working well with others, making thoughtful decisions, taking initiative, and solving complex problems. In order to engage, nurture, and promote the continual development of these children, I am requesting materials for enrichment projects.
Tempera paint, brushes, modeling clay, and craft sticks are some of the necessary materials needed to participate in an enrichment project. These items allow students to investigate their ideas in depth and give the freedom to explore without limitation.
Enrichment projects allow students to be engaged in real-life learning activities that are long-term, interdisciplinary, and student-centered. Students learn how to develop an idea, plan out steps, set goals, conference with others, research, and modify and revise as needed. Enrichment projects engage students in higher order thinking as they make connections, apply, evaluate, and synthesize ideas. These materials will help to promote the unique gifts and talents of this special population. Your help will make it possible for me to offer these much needed experiences to my students. The risk we face in not engaging the unique talents of these gifted students is boredom and an eventual apathetic attitude towards school. Please help my students to be challenged in these meaningful enrichment projects. Thank you.
