Please Give a Hoot!

Help me give my students an opportunity to dissect owl pellets and learn about an owl's life, prey, and role in the ecosystem. While also reading the fictional novel, "Hoot," students will learn about protecting an owl's habitat.

My Project

My students do not have many opportunities to visit museums, zoos, or other educational field trip locations. As a result, they often have fewer real-world experiences compared to their peers who do have access to these resources. By bringing hands-on science learning into the classroom, I aim to provide my students with meaningful experiences they might not otherwise have.

When students are given the opportunity to explore real-life owl pellets through dissection, they will gain memorable, hands-on science experiences that deepen their understanding of biology and ecosystems.

Through this activity, students will apply lab techniques in a practical setting, and they will use diagrams, charts, and data to analyze the contents of each pellet to determine what the owl consumed. This investigation will allow them to make meaningful connections to the novel Hoot, which focuses on the protection of burrowing owls.

Following the dissection, students will analyze their findings to synthesize the owl’s role within its habitat and the food chain. This experience promotes high-level critical thinking, which is further developed through vocabulary instruction, class discussions, and partner collaboration during both the lab and the literary study.

By funding this project, you will help provide my students with valuable learning opportunities that support academic growth, scientific literacy, and engagement. These experiences not only enrich the curriculum but also empower students by fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper connection to the natural world—impacting their lives in lasting and meaningful ways.
