My Students
My students are young men and young ladies who live in the "most dangerous" city in the US as well as being labeled one of the "highest poverty rates." They struggle daily in many ways to make it to school, but once they arrive, they are ready to go. We have breakfast together, and then we are off on our learning adventure for the day. My students come to school to learn. They have plans for college, and to reach those goals we push every day to overcome the struggles they face.
My Project
Please Fill My Belly! is a project to help supplement breakfast and lunch for my students. All my students eat breakfast and lunch at school and sometimes the options are not filling or something they don't eat. The kindergarten students get the same amount of food as my fifth graders. Can you imagine my growing fifth-grade boys being filled with a hot dog? No, it doesn't, so I try to provide a healthy snack for when they are still hungry. I can't expect my students to be ready to work hard with their bellies growling, so I always have a bin of just in case breakfast and lunch extras for my students. They love the different bars for breakfast and lunch, but this year the fruit cups and applesauce are also favorites.
I love to support my students in every way so being able to fill their bellies so they are ready to learn helps my students, and it also supports us building a wonderfully successful, caring classroom.
My classroom is a place my students should feel safe, and I want to make sure they have their basics so we can soar with our learning.
