My Students
I am currently a Middle School Special Education Science/Math teacher. I teach 8th graders. Each child has a specific individualized education plan in order for their academic success.
The majority of the students in my school are struggling financially.
Some of our students even reside in shelters. Most students qualify for the state's free or reduced meal program. Often times, the students come into school without the necessary materials to succeed in school. My school have suffered more budget cuts, and teachers are no longer able to personally give each student the resources they desire.
My Project
I am trying to acquire Chromebooks for the special education students that I service in Math and Science. Chromebook laptops are excellent sources of assistive technology (AT) that help students with special needs access curriculum and information. Google Apps and Extensions provide many supports to students with learning challenges. Chromebooks allow students to access curriculum while avoiding their triggers. Online curriculum and resources allow them to work without distraction, which lowers anxiety. In addition to the 15 laptops, I am requesting a charging/security cabinet.
Chromebooks also allow students to access additional resources to support their learning and address their individual needs.
There are specialized web apps, screen readers, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, screen magnifies, curriculum resources, lesson ideas, collaboration tools, and so much more to help me meet the demands of accommodating their wide range of individualized educational plans.
