After taking 70 students on a field trip last year to see the movie "Super Size Me," I believe their post-movie applause was encouraging. The documentary followed Morgan Spurlock for one month while he ate only McDonald's food. This entertaining film was able to convey to my students the important relationship between health and nutrition. Much attention has been paid recently to the obesity epidemic in the United States, yet at times I feel as if I'm lecturing to deaf ears regarding the importance of nutrition, the danger of obesity, and how each impacts long-term health. Finally, I have found a film that students can relate to, learn from, and enjoy. I wish to recreate this experience every year but the movie has now left the theatres, so I would like to purchase a copy of the movie to show students. Unfortunately, our school does not have access to a DVD player, nor does our Physical Education classroom have a television. Our student population is 2,700, and with the purchase of the movie and dvd/tv combination, we will be able to show this movie to all physical education and health classes, and, I hope, positively influence their nutrition and fitness habits! Additionally, with these resources, we would be able to offer a multitude of other dvd-format courses and information to augment our health and physical education department's offerings. California Healthy Kids has a lending library of research, programs and dvd instructional supplies that we will be able to tap into for these purposes.
